There are many reasons, but mostly, it makes it easy for us to help our clients.
At IT Impact more then half of our work is Access projects, with the other half going to web projects and VB.Net. The other day I got a call from then a prospective client, that has since signed up, and one of the things she mentioned was how hard it was to find an Access programmer. Those that she did find were not really good or too expensive to even try. It's a them we hear all the time, which got me thinking why is it hard to find a good Access consultant?
Access Programmers on the Endangered List?
Good programmers are hard to find, but Access programmers even more so. We know because we look for them too. Invariably we come across a good programmer with little or no Access skills , hire them and run them through our training program. Of all the users I've been doing this I've only found one candidate with good skills, and he still works for us.
We LOVE Access, do you?
But more important then having the skills is having a great attitude towards Access. I can't tell you how many programmers we've interviewed who are great at programming but could care less about Access. In a prior article I wrote many reasons for this attitude, but here we LOVE working with Access:
- It's very easy to create a complete solution in a short amount of time compared to other languages, even Microsoft's other programs. The typical program takes us 2 to 6 weeks at the most and costs less then $25,000.
- The tool set available to the programmer is enough to create any imaginable database solution. We can pair Access with Oracle, SQL Server and MySQL, thus allowing us to create solutions for a wide range of records, from several thousand to millions.
- Lots of the plumbing we need as programmers is built into Access, there is no need to worry about saving records, binding forms, creating setup programs, etc., etc.
